The Melanesian Institute (MI) is an ecumenical research, teaching and publishing body in Papua New Guinea.
Mandated to focus on pastoral and socio-cultural issues
MI examines how traditional Melanesian cultural practices and beliefs interact with Christian teachings and how churches can best serve the spiritual needs of their members within this cultural context. It studies the social structures, customs, and changing dynamics of Melanesian societies. This informs how churches and other organizations can work effectively with communities, addressing issues that impact their well-being.
Ongoing dialogue between Christian values and Melanesian cultures
MI seeks to preserve Melanesian traditions alongside Christian ones, fostering a conversation and integration between the two. It researches and explores how Christian values like compassion, forgiveness, and service can resonate with existing Melanesian values, and examines how Melanesian beliefs and customs can be respected and understood within a Christian framework.
Peace and reconciliation; dignity and respect; justice
MI promotes peace and reconciliation; dignity and respect; and social, economic and ecological justice. It addresses issues that cause conflict in Melanesian societies (like tribal tensions or sorcery accusations) and promotes understanding and peaceful resolutions influenced by both cultural values and Christian teaching. It affirms the inherent worth of every individual within Melanesian cultures, advocating for human rights and challenging practices that undermine dignity. It advocates for fair and equitable development, sustainable resource management, and the protection of traditional lands and ways of life, often informed by Christian ethics of care for creation and the vulnerable.
